Tina Nelson

I am a woman on a mission.

Whether taking photographs of President Barack Obama or advocating for quality education for all children, I live my life with a purpose.

"I am always involved in something that will benefit my community and I like starting things that will help others to be better.”

Not long ago, I experienced some feelings typical of a non-traditional student called nerves. I wondered how I could possibly juggle the responsibilities of family, work and school.

But it didn’t take long for me to thrive in my new surroundings.

After attending a lecture on campus, I was introduced to a man who needed a reporter and photographer for a local Arab American newspaper called the Forum and Link. I interviewed for the position and was hired on the spot. I started out as a reporter. Then quickly moved into my photographers position.

As a student at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, I volunteer for the Women’s Resource Center, mentor SOAR students and organizes events across campus.

After attending the National Conference for College Women Students, held annually at the University of Maryland, I returned to the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus inspired to make a difference and found the University’s chapter of American Association of University Women (AAUW).

My passion for news and information has been the driving force for my interest in the field of photojournalism.

Life has such a different appearance from behind the camera. There is such a great sense of creative freedom which often tell the real truth behind any special event or hard news story.

"What's the scoop?... My job is to take a picture of it."

Through the lens of Tina Nelson is the way I live my life...I hope you can appreciate what I see.
